Exploring 3D Printed Art: Materials, Textures and Creative Possibilities

3D printing is often associated with prototypes, spare parts, and functional objects. But it is also a powerful tool for creating artistic and decorative pieces with unique textures, colors, and finishes.

For this showcase, we produced a selection of 3D printed art objects to demonstrate what is possible with different materials, surface effects, and professional 3D printing machines.

The goal was simple: show how 3D printing can be used not only to manufacture parts, but also to create objects with strong visual impact.

For this project, we printed several decorative models, each one chosen to highlight a different visual style:

  • An Aztec Calendar / Sun Stone

  • A sculptural art piece inspired by “The Source”

  • An Ancient Mayan Pyramid

  • A collection of modern decorative vases

Each object has a different personality. Some are architectural, some are historical, some are sculptural, and others are more modern and minimal.

This variety allowed us to explore different materials and finishing techniques while showing the creative potential of 3D printing.

Materials and finishes

One of the most interesting parts of this project was the use of different filaments and finishing methods.

For the sculptural piece inspired by “The Source”, we used a silk copper filament. This material gives the object a warm metallic shine and helps emphasize the movement and elegance of the sculpture.

For the Aztec Calendar, we used black filament as the base, then added a gold spray paint finish. This created a metallic effect that highlights the detailed relief of the model and gives the piece a more premium look.

The Mayan Pyramid was printed using marble filament, which gives the model a stone-like appearance and fits perfectly with the architectural and historical inspiration of the design.

The vases were printed with pastel color filaments, creating a softer and more decorative look, ideal for interior design, shelves, and display spaces.

These pieces were produced using our Prusa Core One+ and Prusa Core One L machines.

Using reliable, high-quality 3D printers allows us to achieve clean details, consistent surfaces, and repeatable results across different materials.

This is especially important for decorative objects, where the final appearance matters as much as the shape itself. Small details, surface quality, and material choice can completely change the perception of the final object.

From digital model to physical object

Each project starts as a digital file, but the final result depends on many choices: material, print settings, orientation, scale, layer height, and finishing.

This is where 3D printing becomes more than just pressing “print”. The same model can look completely different depending on the chosen material and post-processing technique.

A silk copper filament can make a sculpture feel more elegant. A marble filament can give an architectural model a stone-like texture. A painted finish can turn a simple black print into something that looks more metallic and decorative.

These choices are what transform a 3D print into a finished object.

This art showcase was created to demonstrate the range of possibilities available through 3D printing.
